“Just like that,” I whispered.
“Just like that.” He clapped me on the shoulder. “You have a nice night now.”
“You too, thanks.”
“Yeah, well, once they bring him in, I get even more work because get this, the taxi driver? He was the DA’s son.”
I stared at him. That explained so much.
“So, the DA…?”
“That’s another investigation. Don’t worry, he won’t go unpunished.”
I watched him drive off and shut the door.
“Is everything all right?” Jeannie asked in a small voice.
“Yeah, it is.” And it was. A DA gone dirty was going to get his comeuppance, a hit and run driver was being brought to justice, and I was free and clear.
“Come on,” I said.”Let’s go for that walk first.” Then I took her out by the hand and led her out the back door. Yep, everything was A-OK.
